DESCRIPTION:
EPW - Baldwin & Jones, Boston, lever fusee, 53mm, heavy 14K gold (tested) OF original pair cases bearing Chester hallmarks for 1815 and 18K hallmark but testing below this quality standard as is occasionally encountered among Chester hallmarks, incuse "H H" marking for casemaker Hannah Howard, outer case contains a paper for watchmakers Horton & Rikeman of Savannah, white enamel dial, gold hands, KWKS, lever escapement, bi-metallic balance with blued steel inner rim and brass outer, gilt mvt with ornately engraved balance cock marked "Patent" at its foot, gilt locking dust-cap, s#735. Gross weight of assembled watch 96.3 dwt (149.8 g). A very interesting example with a notably early appearance of a lever escapement, and presumably imported to the United States shortly after the close of the War of 1812 which was ended by treaty on February 15th, 1815. CONDITION:
Mvt: NR, fully wound and will tick for a short while following a twist but stopping before long, overhaul needed, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some small fine and micro-fine scratches surrounding plate pins, some mild micro-fine scratches elsewhere, some ultra-fine scratch striations to plate surface likely from a light wiping in the past; dial with faint hl at edge between 3:30 and 5; near mint hands; outer case shows light wear, rear with some scattered dents and dings, button latch good; inner case shows light wear, some mild circumferential denting around sides, small but prominent protruding ding to right side of rear; bow pivots freely, is thinned at top, and has side-to-side play within pendant; domed glass bull's-eye crystal with some short scratches and fine scratches.
